Why We Provide Free AWS Training and Free Cloud Computing Training

If you have been following our YouTube Channel, or our Blog then you are aware that we provide a great deal of free AWS training, as well as other free cloud training content. It’s very important to us that we make this material available to as many people as possible. Today I want to share with you why we do this.

I will place part of the conclusion here at the top because it is so important to us to make this accessible to as many people as possible:

If you see our training and you enjoy our free training, please share it with someone else. We want to do everything we can to spread the mission of cloud computing and free AWS certification training. If you see us post a lot of free AWS certification materials and other cloud computing training, it’s because we’ve seen gaps in the industry and we want to help the cloud architect community and the solutions architect community.

Before We Start

The week of October 5th, we hosted a FREE AWS CSA-A Bootcamp, find the recordings here!

About the Author

Hello! My name is Michael Gibbs, CEO and Founder of Go Cloud Architects. I’ve been working in technology for well over 25 years. We are dedicated to helping our clients build elite cloud computing careers. I’ve been working in technology for over 25 years, and I’ve spent 20 years of my career coaching or mentoring others to get their first tech job.

In my 25-tech career, I have worked in:

  • Networking
  • Security
  • Cloud computing
  • Teaching
  • Coaching
  • Mentoring

FREE AWS Training: How It Started

It all started about a year and a half ago. A  friend of mine approached me to help his son because he was familiar with my mentoring work. Over the past two decades, I have been a career coach and mentor to countless individuals on their tech career journey. My entire mission is to help people get their first tech job or get promoted in tech, and it’s something that I love.

This young man was in college studying computers. The goal was to jumpstart his career path and have him ready for a big career as soon as he graduated. This young man is an incredibly good person, and I was excited to help him. Unfortunately, I was extremely busy at the time, so I decided to get him the three best AWS certification training courses available at the time. I instructed him to work through the content, and we would have a coaching session every Friday.

Two days into his studying, this young man called me up and told me he didn’t understand the training content. He told me that he’s set up an EC2 instance, but he didn’t really know what it was; and the same thing with S3 buckets. He knew how to configure these things but didn’t really know what they were. I was confused. In my mind, there was no way that he could have taken the training seriously and not know these things. I began to think he might be lazy or not putting forth all the effort. I then watched the videos.

FREE AWS Training: What I Found

Now, remember these are the three best-selling AWS training programs available. I watched the videos and immediately thought “What is this?”. The training simply instructed the name of a service and how to configure it. If that wasn’t bad enough it was simply PowerPoint slides with voiceover. The presentation left a lot to be desired, especially for kinesthetic or auditory learners. If you were able to make it through the presentation, you were still left with only knowing the name of a service and how to configure it. There was no underlying knowledge of why the service exists or why and how it performs the tasks that it does. There simply is no way that after paying for this product someone could be hired, let alone perform the job expected.

I’ve been in the career coaching world for decades now. In this time, I have interviewed thousands of AWS certified professionals. I can say not one was hirable unless they had extensive networking or data center backgrounds. Not even one was hirable, even with multiple AWS certifications, even at the level of the certified solution architect professional. All of them knew very well the name of an AWS service and how to configure it, really, really well. But no one knew what it actually meant.

Here’s the challenge. As a cloud architect or a solutions architect, you’re a systems designer. You’re designing systems based upon a customer’s goals, the customer’s business strategy. If you know their goals and their strategy, then you can find the technology solution to make the business achieve these goals. That’s what cloud architects, solution architects, and enterprise architects do. They don’t configure, it’s great to understand the configuring, but it’s not their role. Thus, it should only be a small piece of the training. These certification training programs focus only on the configuring piece.

These solution architect training programs teach the name of the service and how to configure it. There is nothing related to architecture work. As an architect, you need to be able to migrate systems coming from the data center to the cloud. You can’t migrate things that you don’t understand. It’s just not possible. If you don’t understand servers, virtualizations, containers, firewalls, load balancers, VPN devices, and networking; how are you going to take all that stuff and design it in the cloud? You must know and understand what it is first.

FREE AWS Training: Our Solution

With this in mind, I developed a solution to help the community. I decided that we would write a book about passing the AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate Exam. Then we would develop a training program of our own. We were going to do this and give it away for free. Within weeks of the book being available, over 25,000 copies had been downloaded. We were receiving emails every day thanking us for the difference it made in their training and their career. We were thanked for explaining cloud computing and what it really was. People thanked us because they passed their certification exam or got their first cloud architect job.

This young man and I were amazed and excited by this response. We hadn’t even started putting the training together, and people were already thankful for what we had done, and they were succeeding! Then in April 2021, we produced our completely FREE AWS Certified Solution Architect Associate Course available on YouTube. In June 2021, we did a live FREE architecture-based AWS Certified Solution Architect Professional Course on YouTube. In July 2021 we did the live FREE AWS Advanced Networking Course on YouTube. Throughout August we did regular weekly FREE networking and subnetting workshops on YouTube. And now in October, we are preparing to do our live FREE AWS Certified Solution Architect Association course on YouTube.

As I stated before, our mission is to make the barrier for entry to the cloud computing career world as low as possible. This is the reason why we provide this training for free to the community. Certification is only a small piece of what is needed to be hired, let alone be successful in your cloud architect career. You must have a solid understanding of cloud computing and how it actually works. People’s money is better spent on these deeper and harder to achieve skills and knowledge than on the entry-level certification.

When we make our training, we do them differently. We focus our training on the architectural design principles of what are the systems How do they work, and why do you use them? We know that everybody earning a certification already knows out how to configure the systems. But applying these things and knowing what it means are two different things. So we have produced this content and will continue to do so.

If you see us post a lot of free AWS certification materials and other cloud computing training, it’s because we’ve seen gaps in the industry. We want to help the cloud architect community and the solutions architect community. If you see our training and you enjoy our free training, please share it with someone else. We want to do everything we can to spread the mission of cloud computing and free AWS certification training.
